Dr Tonny Omwansa

Dr. Omwansa is a leading innovation ecosystem builder in Africa, currently serving as the CEO of the Kenya National Innovation Agency, where he oversees the development and management of Kenya’s Innovation Ecosystem. He also heads the Secretariat of the Pan-African Innovation Agencies Network. As a seasoned governance expert, is a Board member of several organizations, including the National Research Fund and the Commission of Science, Technology, and Innovation. As part of his innovation policy and practice drive over the years, he has founded and run numerous entrepreneurship programs and accelerators across different sectors, and built multiple regional and global partnerships within Governments, Private Sector and Academia. As part of his recent work, he led the development of Kenya’s 10-year National Innovation Master Plan, supported the drafting of the national IP policy and Startup Bill as well as numerous institutional innovation, commercialization, and startup development programs. He has also guided the University fraternity in Kenya to develop and mainstream the Entrepreneurial Institutions Maturity Frameworks and continues to capacity built instituitonal leaders to be effective Entrepreneurial Leaders. Dr. Omwansa founded and oversees the Kenya Innovation Week, National Commercialization and Entrepreneurial Institution Leaders (CEIL) Summit, and Kenya’s Startup Festival. Dr. Omwansa has also published widely and continues to influence innovation strategies and policies in Kenya and the region.
